Biography of P.P.S.

To speak of PPS, is to speak of verse and rhymes as a long history links this boy to his writing. Little boy, one can say, because since a young age, this hard worker had already contructued a world made of poems, songs, and drawings.

 Paul Pissety Sagna was born in Dangou, a working-class neighborhood in the city of Rufisque. Coming from a modest family, he stood out from the others by his sensitivity and his love for art, but also by his svelte and mischeivous personality. Moreover, brilliant in class in his neighborhood’s primary school, he made a mark for himself during recess where he would rhyme or imitate rappers like Deug E tee or MC Solaar in frot of an audience of his classmates. His first real step in Hip Hop was during the summer of 1993, when he was ten years old, living with his uncle in Sicap Baobab, a neighborhood in Dakar where he spent most of his vacations. With the influence of a growing Hip Hop scene in Senegal, he decided to form a rap group with five friends (Souhel, Amadou, Stéphane, J-Louis et Jacques). They called themselves “Crazy Boyz.” With the help of Philip Monteiro, now one of the most famous Cabo love singers in Senegal, they made a song, “Goné bou tuuti boul joy” (little kid, don’t cry). They were invited on the radio show “FM samedi relax” with Mickael Soumah (the best hip hop show at the time). But the group broke up at the end of the vacation because they had to face the reality of returning to school.

 Far from letting this discourage him, upon returning to Rufisque, PPS decided to continue to rap, but he was confronted with his parents refusal to see their son devote himself to a type of music that was considered to be associated with a gangster lifestyle. He continued secretly to write raps as well as focus on developping art, especially Graffiti.

 In 1998, as a rebellious adolescent, he decided to form another group: BATEEN (Black African Teenagers) with his cousin, Jules. But this time, the style was hardcore, with more involved lyrics and a hard flow.

 In 2000, he met Kangbou and Ive, with whom he decided to form the group, ME-SAGE-HE (Movement of Conscience Elements to Bring his Generation to the Awakening through Hip Hop). The group quickly established itself as valuable to the Hip Hop scene in Rufisque, permitting PPS, the Writah, to take on another dimension.

 After obtaining his Bac, he went to the University of Cheick Anta Diop, where he specialised in French. There, he met rappers from diverse backgrounds and gained a lot of experience in Hip Hop. He learned to sharper his rhymes and to give real meaning to his lyrics, proving that he had something to say.

 As the banner-bearer of Graffiti in Rufisque (with his groupe SCRIB), and now a solo Hip Hop artist, he stands out by his voice, his writing, and his ability to form his rhymes, all accompagnied with a lot of technique. He incarnates the renaissance of Hip Hop in his city, with a conscience and vibrant style, embodied in his concept of “GUIMI GUINDI” (to stay awakened and conscientious).

 As a militant of hip hop and a negotiator of the lower class, he raps to represent and feed the conviction that he will become one of the leaders of Senegalese and African Hip Hop in the near future.
